I read this article straight through twice. It’s facinating. NERDGASM!
“Now a small contingent of researchers, many of them evolutionary biologists who typically have nothing to do with linguistics, are looking at language from in front of their computers, using mathematical techniques imported from the study of DNA to wring scenarios of language evolution out of huge amounts of comparative speech data.
These data analyzers assume that words and other language units change systematically as they are passed from one generation to the next, much the way genes do. Charles Darwin similarly argued in 1871 that languages, like biological species, have evolved into a series of related forms.”

Reporting my first temporal excursion since joining IATT: have just returned from 1936 Berlin, having taken the place of one of Leni Riefenstahl’s cameramen and assassinated Adolf Hitler during the opening of the Olympic Games. Let a free world rejoice!

Back from 1936 Berlin; incapacitated FreedomFighter69 before he could pull his little stunt. Freedomfighter69, as you are a new member, please read IATT Bulletin 1147 regarding the killing of Hitler before your next excursion. Failure to do so may result in your expulsion per Bylaw 223.

Take it easy on the kid, SilverFox316; everybody kills Hitler on their first trip. I did. It always gets fixed within a few minutes, what’s the harm?

Easy for you to say, BigChill, since to my recollection you’ve never volunteered to go back and fix it. You think I’ve got nothing better to do?

Good news! I just left a French battlefield in October 1916, where I shot dead a young Bavarian Army messenger named Adolf Hitler! Not bad for my first time, no? Sic semper tyrannis!

Back from 1916 France I come, having at the last possible second prevented Hitler’s early demise at the hands of JudgeDoom and, incredibly, restrained myself from shooting JudgeDoom and sparing us all years of correcting his misguided antics. READ BULLETIN 1147, PEOPLE!

Point of order: issues related to Hitler’s service in the Bavarian Army ought to go in the World War I forum.

Vienna, 1907: after numerous attempts, have infiltrated the Academy of Fine Arts and facilitated Adolf Hitler’s admission to that institution. Goodbye, Hitler the dictator; hello, Hitler the modestly successful landscape artist! Brought back a few of his paintings as well, any buyers?

All right; that’s it. Having just returned from 1907 Vienna where I secured the expulsion of Hitler from the Academy by means of an elaborate prank involving the Prefect, a goat, and a substantial quantity of olive oil, I now turn my attention to our newer brethren, who, despite rules to the contrary, seem to have no intention of reading Bulletin 1147 (nor its Addendum, Alternate Means of Subverting the Hitlerian Destiny, and here I’m looking at you, SneakyPete). Permit me to sum it up and save you the trouble: no Hitler means no Third Reich, no World War II, no rocketry programs, no electronics, no computers, no time travel. Get the picture?
At 02:29:49, SilverFox316 wrote:
PS to SneakyPete: your Hitler paintings aren’t worth anything, schmuck, since you probably brought them directly here from 1907, which means the paint’s still fresh. Freaking n00b.

Amen, SilverFox316. Although, point of order, issues relating to early 1900s Vienna should really go in that forum, not here. This has been a recurring problem on this forum.

SilverFox316, you seem to know a lot about the rules; what are your thoughts on traveling to, say, Braunau, Austria, in 1875 and killing Alois Hitler before he has a chance to father Adolf? Mind you, I’m asking out of curiosity alone, since I already went and did it.

Jason440953, see Bylaw 7, which states that all IATT rulings regarding historical persons apply to ancestors as well. I post this for the benefit of others, as I already made this clear to young Jason in person as I was dragging him back from 1875 by his hair. Got that? No ancestors. (Though if anyone were to go back to, say, Moline, Illinois, in, say, 2080 or so, and intercede to prevent Jason440953’s conception, I could be persuaded to look the other way.)

What gives is everyone’s repeated insistence on a course of action which, even if successful, would only save a few million Europeans. It would be no more trouble to travel to Fuyuanshui, China, in 1814 and kill Hong Xiuquan, thus preventing the Taiping Rebellion of the mid–nineteenth century and saving fifty million lives in the process. But, hey, what are fifty million yellow devils more or less, right, guys? We’ve got Poles and Frenchmen to worry about.

Point of order: this discussion belongs in the Qing Dynasty forum. We’re adults; can we keep sight of what’s important around here?
It was very interesting…
I spent 30 months there…just me and little mammals and ferns and dinosaurs. Didn’t mean to go that far back but time travel is hard!
I have to tell you, it’s great to be back. I thought I had enough of people but I missed humans so much after two and a half years basically all on my own.
And I found out what really killed the dinosaurs!…they were actually quite intelligent and the fast tiny ones hunted the big ones to extinction with their little lasers…and when there were no more other dinos to hunt, they turned on themselves…so sad. An entire intelligent species killed itself out with war…
I think there is a lesson to be learned from all that. You know???
Well I’m leaving for my trip in exactly 3 weeks (when you time travel, it’s hard to get your mind focused on exactly the right time so I actually arrived 3 weeks before I even left!) I’m making sure not to see my present self (I’m sure THAT would cause all sorts of trouble!) so I’m hiding out at a hotel with a Wi-Fi connection and ordering pizza until the ‘other me’ invents time travel and leaves for the trip…
I’m sure in 3 weeks you will get a post from me saying I invented a way to time travel back and forth through what most people would call ‘time’ and everything…not believing me, of course. How could you believe something so fantastic? But I did…err…I **will** and it’s going to be the best experience a person can have. I may share it with the world when the time is right. I just don’t want us to end up like those mean little dinosaurs.
Did you know Tesla invented a hover car about 100 years ago? Yeah…the government hid that fact and the technology is now used for stealth bombers. You know it’s impossible for them to fly under ‘normal’ methods. They would run out of fuel WAY before they land. While in the air they use Tesla’s antigravity hover technology…so that shows what just one person can do. But I digress…
See ya in 3 weeks when I get to leave this box they call a hotel! In the meantime, the ‘other-Keith’ will surely keep you all entertained.
Until then!

I was watching the Science Channel on Sunday…scientists were talking about Saturn’s rings and moons…and how there is this picture of Saturn from the Cassini spacecraft where Saurn is in front of the sun ‘haloing’ it and you can see all the rings and moons and a tiny little dot. That tiny little dot is Earth. It is regarded by many as arguably the most beautiful picture ever taken. This picture is great, but has nothing on the one I just described. It is breathtaking.
90 notes (via fuckyeahtheuniverse)
Evolution has obviously been a political issue for a while, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an attack ad like this one before: It mocks a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor of Alabama for believing in the theory.
The outraged pushback from candidate Bradley Byrne:
• As a Christian and as a public servant, I have never wavered in my belief that this world and everything in it is a masterpiece created by the hands of God. As a member of the Alabama Board of Education, the record clearly shows that I fought to ensure the teaching of creationism in our school textbooks. Those who attack me have distorted, twisted and misrepresented my comments and are spewing utter lies to the people of this state.
MY QUESTION: Why couldn’t God have created evolution? What’s wrong with that? It seems to work well in theory and all we will ever have is theories, anyway. Plus I wouldn’t like the thought of myself or the human species never being able to ‘evolve’ into something better.
Your thoughts?
